[LUG] Tape Drive replacement

Hi folks,

Thanks for the input. Based on comments here and reading elsewhere I
think I'm leaning towards using hard-drives for backup. I have
existing removable drive trays and a pair of sata controllers that are
hot-swap friendly under linux. Roll up some sort of mirrored RAID to
replace the existing single disks and I may well be in business.

I've considered NAS based backups before and the only major failing I
saw to their use in my setup was ease of taking the disks off-site. I
store all my critical data in my safety deposit box at the bank so if
a fire destroys my apartment the tapes, drives & CD/DVD media are
still safe. The catch I found with the NAS I bought (NSLU2) is the
speed with which it backed up media onto my backup disks. A times I
woke up in the morning (8hrs later) only to see the NAS still chugging
away transferring the backup to disk.
